Since February 2013, I've been Earthing. Now, you're probably doing what most people do and say, "Huh!?", when I tell them about this daily practice of mine.
It was about a year ago, February 2013, when I was talking to myself in my kitchen. I was pissed off that I still hadn't fully recovered from yoga related injuries a year ago in February 2012. I had gone to the doctor, to massage therapy, for acupuncture, continued to practice yoga and tried numerous other things. So frustrated to be out of pocket several hundred dollars and still not fully recovered. I felt that I had done everything, but was sure there must be something I was missing. I shouted aloud: "What on earth am I supposed to do!?!" Oddly enough, that was the answer.
I had heard about Earthing back in 2010. A book by Clinton Orber, Earthing: The most important health discovery ever?, came out that caught my attention, but I dismissed it thinking that because I live in Ottawa Canada, that putting my feet on bare ground wouldn't be much of an option here when it's freezing outside half the year.
Just when I needed it, Earthing links started popping up during my web browsing, and my viewpoint changed. I downloaded the book and found out that there's some products that are available that can overcome the logistics of the frozen country I live in. And, considering the multitude of benefits, I ordered the starter Earthing kit -- a rubber mat, a wire, the book and an outlet tester.
My package was ready to pick up at the post office on the day of the worst winter storms of the season. We had been let out of work early and as I was driving home, I was passing cars, trucks and school buses that had slid off into the ditches. The normally 20 minute drive, turned into a 90 minute white knuckled, shoulders up in my ears, stress-fest. I was going to forget about picking up my Earthing kit, all things considered, but it summoned me. I popped into the Post Office. I was so exhausted from the drive and then the snow shovelling of my driveway that I didn't even open up my package. I brought the kit to work the next day to set up my Earthing Mat at my desk.
My shoulders and neck were really stiff that morning from the previous evening's drive and shovelling. I considered taking pain medication -- which is unlike me -- but decided to wait and see. I tested the outlet at my workstation, it was good to go, and plugged in the earthing mat which I had under my keyboard. I made sure that I had bare skin (wrists) touching the mat.
I couldn't believe it. Within an hour, my soreness was gone. ALL gone. I'm sure that if I hadn't 'earthed' that I would have been booking appointments with my chiropractor and massage therapist for that week and would have reached for the pain meds. This earthing practice is excellent for reducing inflammation and it's so natural.
So I continued to earth, everyday, since. Haven't missed a day. I feel fantastic. It's been a great tool for recovering from strenuous workouts or digestive upset or jet lag or an emotionally charged day. It always brings me back to balance and I really feel so much more connected. I will do this for the rest of my life.
